Landscape Design Projects
TORVER VISITOR CENTRE & ENVIRONS
Designing within the highly protected Lake District National Park holds many challenges to both the designer and to the landscape. The aim of this project is to design a new visitor centre to engage people with their outdoor environment in a manner beneficial to both. The design of the centre and surrounding area has been approached in a manner sympathetic to the conservation and enhancement of this heritage landscape.
LANDSCAPE CHARACTER ASSESSMENT
This project focuses on the Landscape Character Assessment of the prosperous town of Ilkley in West Yorkshire. It researches and documents a proven approach to how a landscape can be observed, analysed, described, categorised and evaluated. It also investigates the importance of making good landscape judgement and the impact of these on future development plans.
HARLOW CARR PUBLIC GARDEN
The RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr are undergoing comprehensive improvements to enhance the gardens as a commercial attraction and educational resource and to cater for the growing numbers of visitors and organisational objectives. The proposed Spa Centre and Cafe Gardens provides new and exciting opportunities for visitors and the RHS alike, increasing visitor numbers and raising further revenue. Built around the fresh and inspiring themes of mountain tarns and woodland clearings this design is distinctive and functional whilst celebrating existing natural features and conserving historical values of the site.
Kirkstall has, for so long, been inward focused and has neglected to nurture the very asset it has at the bottom of the garden … THE RIVER. This project aims to turn Kirkstall around and to focus on making the most of both existing and potential assets of Kirkstall and it’s community. This vision offers to deliver a new lease of life to the area, to provide additional income, new jobs and a focus for the community.
BROWNFIELD SITE DEVELOPMENT
This is my current project. I will upload more images as I progress. This work forms part of my MA final major design which is due to complete in mid-May.
COMMISSIONED AND CONCEPTUAL
A variety of garden solutions designed and built either within the university setting or from within my own studio. Garden designs to improve privately owned outdoor spaces, making successful spatial relationships based on need and aesthetics. Projects experiment with hard and soft materials, form, colour and style and are delivered within differing budgets from the tight to the extravagant. All designs aim to provide sustainable, green and invigorating environments that are tailored to suit individual needs and desires, whilst being sympathetic to the site and situation.Click on picture for larger slideshow
CONTEMPORARY PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN
Despite the prominence of the Rose Bowl building and its location on one of the key routes into the city of Leeds the current use of space to the front of the Rose Bowl is uninspiring. The Rosebowl Plaza provides a design concept for a new contemporary public space and a playful uplifting green gateway into Leeds city centre. It offers engaging, flexible spaces for the informal interaction of students, professionals and the general public alike.
DESIGNING FOR PEOPLE AND NATURE
Located at the top of an exposed South Pennine moorland escarpment, at approx 450m above sea level, lies the old sandstone quarries of Nab Hill. The design intervention proposes to build a visitor attraction within this quarry that does more than just beautify an otherwise abused and abandoned landscape – it aims to positively influence how people encounter, interpret and make sense of this wild and ecologically sensitive area.
